Aquaponics

Aquaponics

The Department of Fisheries and Ocean Canada is responsible for most aspects of the aquaculture industry in British Columbia under the Pacific Aquaculture Regulations (PAR) and issues licences for marine finfish, shellfish and freshwater (or land-based) operations.

An aquaponics system may require a Freshwater/land-based aquaculture licence under the Fisheries Act. Applicants are encouraged to review the General Conditions of License Part B and familiarize themselves with the Introductions and Transfers Committees (ITC) if needing to move fish around British Columbia, including to the proposed aquaponics facility.

To determine if you require a federal Freshwater/Land-based aquaculture licence for your proposed aquaponics facility, refer to the Aquaponics Licensing flowchart.

If using Crown Land for your aquaponics facility, refer to the provincial Land Use - Aquaculture webpage.

For a new federal Freshwater/Land-Based Aquaculture licence, complete a new site application form and refer to page 17 of the form for submission options.
